Do you need to watch ‘Elementary’ to watch ‘Watson’?

No, viewers do not need to watch “Elementary” before watching “Watson.” Though some Sherlock fans are calling the new release an “Elementary” sequel.

The only official correlations between “Watson” and CBS’ 2012 drama series “Elementary” is that the two shows are inspired by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s “Sherlock Holmes” and writer Craig Sweeny.

Sweeny wrote several episodes of “Elementary” and is the led writer behind “Watson.”

Over the course of seven seasons, “Elementary” takes a different approach to the classic Sherlock story, replacing Dr. John Watson with Dr. Joan Watson, played by Lucy Liu − the first female version of Holmes’ beloved sidekick.

Entertainment journalist Jack Ori wrote for Screen Rant that “Watson” is “the closest thing to a spiritual successor to ‘Elementary.'”

Ori said that “Elementary” humanized the classic Sherlock characters, which he hopes will be the case in “Watson.”
